Why Dive Aliwal Shoal?
Your adventure begins when launching from the Umkomaas River Mouth.
The ride out to the shoal is between 10 and 15 minutes depending on the surface conditions.
On the way out you can see dolphins, turtles, hammerhead sharks and in winter humpback whales. It’s a fun ride to keep your GoPro handy to record your entire adventure.
Below the surface awaits Ragged Tooth Sharks (Grey Nurse Sharks/Spotted Sand Tiger Sharks) sometimes in the hundreds. These are accompanied by other critters such as sleeping turtles that can be found under ledges. Sometimes, dolphins like to swim by to check you out, you can hear their little squeaks before they get there. We even like to reach out and touch their breath after they’ve left.
Looking up from the reef you get to see rays in mid-water. Devil rays like to draw a wide circle around divers and Mantas like to sometimes swim over your bubbles, tickling their belly.
This all happens before you’ve even reached the Cageless Shark Dive. We do this over Howard’s Castle which is just off Aliwal Shoal. You get surrounded by Oceanic Black Tips that are drawn by an anchovy scent trail.
