Ragged Toothed Shark (Spotted Sand Tiger) : May – October
During the winter months Aliwal Shoal becomes the breeding grounds for these awesome sharks. Encounters are very close up and they congregate in massive numbers between June and September.
Oceanic Black Tip Shark :All year round
We are very fortunate that we are able to dive with this species all year round in large numbers. Numbers are larger in the summer months November – May. During baited dives encounters with these sharks are awesome. They get really up close and personal!!!
Zambezi Shark (Bull Shark) : November – May
One of the highlights of Protea Banks is encountering Bull Sharks on most dives. During the summer months we can also bait for them which makes for a very exciting experience.
White Tip Reef Sharks : All year round
There is a resident family shiver of sharks that is encountered in specific areas on the pinnacle ridge of Aliwal Shoal.
Tiger Shark : February – April
Our apex predator in our area. These sharks are more difficult to see and can be very seasonal. Mostly seen on the baited dives during February to March. But when we do get them they are very curious and can get very close.
Hammerhead Shark (Scalloped & Greater) : All year round on Protea Banks
Although we encounter this species all year round they are more prevalent in the summer months where the scalloped congregate in very large numbers. They are very shy animals and it is difficult to get close. However, when we see them it is always such a fantastic experience. They are most seen at Protea Banks.
Other species that can be encountered but less often are Giant guitar Sharks and Dusky sharks.
