The History Beneath the Waves: Aliwal Shoal’s Iconic Wrecks

 MV Produce

The MV Produce, a Norwegian cargo vessel, met her fate in 1974 when she struck the northern section of the Aliwal Shoal reef. Now resting at a depth between 30–32 metres, the wreck has transformed into a thriving underwater metropolis. You’ll encounter ragged-tooth sharksmoray eelskingfish, and turtles, weaving through the remains of her steel hull.

With visibility often reaching up to 20 metres, diving the MV Produce feels like stepping back in time, a hauntingly beautiful reminder of the ocean’s power and resilience.

⚙️ SS Nebo

Older and equally captivating, the SS Nebo sank in 1884 on her maiden voyage from Sunderland to Durban. Resting at approximately 27 metres, this historic wreck lies scattered across the seafloor, now covered in vibrant soft corals and an abundance of marine life.

The Nebo is home to schools of snapper, batfish, and butterflyfish, making it a photographer’s paradise.  Her fascinating history and accessible depth create an inviting site for advanced divers looking to experience a piece of maritime heritage up close.
